Cleanings & Prevention
One important service we offer our patients is focused on prevention of tooth and gum disease.
We provide dental examinations, diagnostic radiographs, dental cleanings and gum disease treatments, fluoride treatments and sealant application.
Dental Examination
We perform a comprehensive examination for every new patient, and regular checkup exams at subsequent dental cleaning appointments.
Examinations include a visual exam: checking all teeth surfaces for decay, checking existing restorations for any signs of failure, oral cancer screening and gum disease evaluation.
Dental X-rays
Digital diagnostic radiographs are essential for detection of hidden decay, bone tumours and cysts, tooth abscesses and bone loss. They also help determine tooth and root position and developmental abnormalities of the permanent teeth in children.
Dental cleanings and gum disease treatment
Dental cleanings are performed in our office by highly trained and experienced Registered Dental Hygienists.
We personalize the dental cleaning. Each patient's gums are assessed at every appointment and we make customized recommendations for home care and for the frequency of dental cleanings based on their specific needs.
For some patients we can help obtain an increase in their dental insurance coverage for hygiene procedures if needed in maintaining a healthy mouth.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride remains the most effective and safe agent available to help with tooth decay prevention. Although most people receive fluoride from water and food intake, some patients benefit from additional topical fluoride treatment.
We will recommend topical fluoride treatments for patients at high risk of decay, such as children and elderly, patients with dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, inadequate exposure to fluoride in their water supply, exposed and sensitive root surfaces, frequent intake of sugary or acidic foods and drinks, or patients with rampant decay.
Sealant Applications
Sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to the teeth to cover and protect any deep grooves (called pits or fissures). Deep pits and fissures are highly susceptible to decay, and more than 75% of cavities start in these deep grooves of the teeth.
Sealants protect teeth by sealing the deep grooves and creating a smooth, easy to clean surface.
We recommend sealants for every grooved permanent teeth, some children and teenagers or even primary teeth in high decay risk children.
